Cat in the Hat Goes Cruising

Carnival Cruise Line announced a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to bring to life the beloved children’s books to the lines 24 ships. In what they claim as an industry first, the Carnival Seuss at Sea program will give kids plenty of activities, entertainment, and dinning fun while onboard. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line already has partnerships with DreamWorks Animation and Nickelodeon, respectively, bring their characters to life on their ships. Not to mention Disney Cruise Line, who doesn’t need a partnership to bring characters children love on their ships.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival will offer The Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast in the main dinning room on the first sea day. For five dollars per guest, attendees will have the wait staff serve them foods inspired by Dr. Seuss books. Characters from the books will also join them at their tables for even more fun and photo opportunities.

There will also be Seuss story time help on sea day on each voyage, which will include some of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters. There will be opportunities for guest to meet and get their pictures taken with the characters. A Seuss-a-palooza Character parade will also take place, much like the DreamWorks Character parades on Royal Caribbean.

The Carnival Freedom, which will get refurbished in May, along with the Carnival Vista, set to debut in 2016, will feature the Dr. Seuss Bookville. This will be a fun play space inspired by the world of Dr. Seuss.

The Seuss at Sea program will debut on the Carnival Splendor in February and will be on all 24 Carnival ships by 2015.

While this may not be totally an industry first, it sure promises to be fun for people of all ages who love the rhymes of Dr. Seuss.

There is a New Princess

On Thursday The Duchess of Cambridge will officially christen the Royal Princess. The Royal Princess is the much talked about brand new ship from Princess Cruise Line. The christening ceremony, will start at 6:15 am eastern time/5:15 central time, will be streamed live on Princess Cruises’ website If your not freak like I am and set an alarm so you can get up and watch this special event, you can watch a replay of the christening ceremony online.

Back when the Norwegian Breakaway was christened I did a post featuring photos of the ship that were shared over social media. I decided I would do another post like that for the Royal Princess. So without further a-do, let me shut my mouth (finger) and let the pictures do the talking. Here are some of the pictures that have came out since she has arrived in Southampton.

What a beautiful ship she is.

These show the much talked about SeaWalk, a glass bottomed walkway that extend 28 feet off the side of the ship.

Next up is a few pictures of the adults only Sanctuary.

The atrium on the Royal Princess is where the action will be since it will be the social hub of the ship!

Finally the outside areas of this beautiful ship.

Thank you to everyone tweeting pictures of this beautiful ship and congratulations to Princess Cruise Line on their newest addition.

Social Media Showing Off The Norwegian Breakaway

Don’t you just love social media? Remember the days when you had to wait for the event to be over and the newspaper to come out before you saw pictures of it? Those days are gone! With sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram; we can see whats going on almost as its happening. Of course, we also have to thank smart phones for helping out with this feat.

This past week the Norwegian Breakaway was christened in New York City. She is the largest cruise ship to be positioned full time in New York. The build up to the event on May 8, 2013 was huge and everyone in the cruise industry was talking about it. Norwegian Cruise  Line also set up a live video theme of the ceremony. At one point, I saw a tweet that there were almost 6,500 viewers on the live feed but that number dropped as they experienced a few technical problems with it.NorwegianBreakaway.jpg

Then she set sail and we have been seeing pictures and comments come in over twitter and other social media sites. I sorted through some of the tweets and picked out my favorites to show. The picture above was tweeted many times and I can’t seem to find the original person who tweeted it to give credit.

Norwegian Cruise Line was busy posting pictures to their Instagram page. It looks like they are proud of her and want to show her off. Here are some of the pictures from their account.

She has arrived! #norwegianbreakawayis docked in #nyc! Check out the view of the city.

Ok I know what some of you are thinking; These are professionally taken photos from the cruise line to make their ship look good. For this reason I sat down and searched twitter for passengers pictures of the ship. There were plenty to chose from so here are some of my favorites.

I think those are some impressive photos from people who were already lucky enough to sail on her. I can’t wait to get my turn to see her in person

Cruising is Loving New York

The cruise industry is showing the Big Apple some lover these days. Well maybe it not just New York City but the area surrounding it. Two new ships will be calling this area home in the near future. Both of these ships sound spectacular and innovative as well. And both of these ships are causing the whole cruise world to talk.

Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway

The first one to arrive is actually on her way here as I type this. The Norwegian Breakaway, from Norwegian Cruise line, will arrive in New York on May 7, 2013. She will be sailing year-round from Manhattan Harbor with itineraries to Bermuda, Florida and the Bahamas, and the Southern Caribbean.

There are so many exciting features on this ship. From areas like the Aqua Park & Sports deck, 678 Oceanplace, and The Waterfront (a boardwalk community right on the ship). Entertainment on the Breakaway will include three Broadway shows: five-time Tony nominated ROCK OF AGES; the dance sensation BURN THE FLOOR; and CIRQUE DREAMS & DINNER JUNGLE FANTASY. If you want to be pampered in an exclusive “ship with-in a ship”, maybe The Haven is for you. You can read more about the haven in an earlier post: A Look at The Haven on the New Norwegian Breakaway

Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas

The second ship to call the New York area home will be the Quantum of the Seas from Royal Caribbean. Launching in 2014 She will sail out of the New York Harbor from her homeport of Cape Liberty on 7- to 12-night itineraries during the winter 2014/15 season. The Quantum of the Seas is currently being built Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. Knowing Royal Caribbean’s style and history, with the Oasis class ships, we will be talking about this ship a lot more before it launches.

RipCord by iFly

A few weeks ago, Royal Caribbean released some of the innovated features that will grace this ship. We are talking about skydiving at sea, hanging out over the edge of thee boat in a glass pod, and inside cabins with a view of the ocean. I wrote about these features in an earlier blog post: Quantum of the Seas Dazzles.

There will be more information coming on the Quantum of the Seas to build excitement for her launch.

It is clear that the cruise industry is excited about the New York area market, and why not? It is a large market with many people who wouldn’t have to travel to catch their ship. For those who are from a “non-cruising” market, like me, New York provides a great place for a pre or post cruise stay. Either way I say, “Keep them new ships coming!”

Quantum of the Seas Dazzles

Royal Caribbean International is at it again. The cruise line on April 16th released some of the new innovative feature of their new ship, Quantum of the Seas, set to launch in November of 2014. She will sail out of the New York Harbor from her homeport of Cape Liberty on 7- to 12-night itineraries during the winter 2014/15 season. If some of these new features don’t make you say wow, then it must take a lot to impress you.

Quantum of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas

“This new generation of ships gave us an opportunity to make another leap in vessel design.  Innovation has always been part of our DNA and we have taken advantage of all that creativity to design Quantum cruising,” stated Richard D. Fain, chairman & CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. Innovations were plentiful on the company’s Oasis class ships. From balcony stateroom on the inside of the ship, to the 7 different “neighborhoods”, to the zip line on board the ship, they had their work cut out for them to make a splash with their new class of ships.

Industry first on the Quantum of the Seas include:

  • RipCord by iFly, the first skydiving experience at sea which allows everyone from first-time flyers to seasoned skydivers to enjoy the sheer thrill and exhilaration of skydiving in a safe, controlled, and simulated environment.

    RipCord by iFly

  • North Star, an engineering marvel, takes guests to new heights – literally – with a jewel-shaped, glass capsule, transporting them on a spectacular journey more than 300 feet above the ocean and over the sides of the ship to deliver awe-inspiring 360-degree views.

  • The largest indoor active space at sea, SeaPlex has new features that will impress guests of all ages.  You can experience a circus school with flying trapeze, or play basketball on a full-size regulation basketball court.  By night, the first-ever bumper car and roller skating offerings deliver fun and excitement.  Guest can dance the night away to music provide by a DJ in a floating booth.

They didn’t stop here! They also gave the staterooms some of their innovating touches as well. These are just as exciting as the public space features.

  • Virtual Balcony staterooms virtual balconies to interior staterooms offering expansive real-time views of the ocean and exciting destinations.

    Virtual Balcony

  • Family-Connected staterooms deliver more flexibility, using three different stateroom categories that connect to form a special layout that provides separate bedrooms and bathrooms for all.  These accommodations allow families and groups of friends traveling together to enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to together and alone time.
  • With Quantum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean introduces the largest variety of stateroom categories, including new Studio staterooms, some with balconies for single travelers, three Junior Suite categories and larger Loft Suites.

Don’t worry they are not getting rid of the popular thing you already see on their ships. Their venues and experiences popular with families such as the Rock Climbing Wall; FlowRider surf simulator; the award-winning Adventure Ocean children’s program; the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery; and the DreamWorks entertainment and events featuring the characters from animated movies: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar; will all be back on Quantum class. They have also promised to keep the information on new and exciting features on the Quantum of the Seas coming. It’s going to be a fun few months.

Royal Princess Comes to Life at Night

Part of the fun of cruising is the nightlife on board the ship. You get back from spending the day in port, have dinner, and let the fun begin. Maybe you check out a show in the theater, play a few games in the casino, or have a few drinks and some dancing in the nightclub. Today’s new ships have a ton to do to keep you entertained long into the night.

Rendering of the Royal Princess at night.

Recently Princess Cruises gave us all better look at what the nightlife will look like on their newest ship, the Royal Princess. The Royal Princess will make her debut on June 16, 2013. She will be sailing 12-day Grand Mediterranean voyages before her first trans-Atlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale where she will sail from for the winter.

“Royal Princess will feature the widest variety of entertainment we have ever offered at sea,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises’ executive vice president. “No matter how passengers like to spend their evenings at sea, we’ll have an exceptional array of options to keep passengers entertained.”

Club 6 – A new dance club, conveniently located on Deck 6 near the Atrium, Club 6 offers a vibrant space with an intimate atmosphere and contemporary decor. Passengers can grab a cocktail and dance to their favorite hits.

Production Shows – With high-definition screens and a brand new lighting system to enhance each show, the Princess Theater will offer a larger and more spectacular space for the line’s original production shows and entertainers. Four new productions will debut aboard Royal Princess, including “Colors of the World,” an experiential journey through the destinations visited by Princess ships; “Spectacular!” a musical revue extravaganza; “Sweet Soul Music,” an upbeat tribute to Rhythm and Blues; and “What the World Needs Now,” a timeless, elegant show celebrating the music and style of the ‘60s.

Princess Theater

Princess Theater

Vista Lounge – A more intimate entertainment setting, the Vista Lounge will host a variety of top-notch entertainers each night, from live bands to comedians and illusionists, plus themed parties and special events.

Casino – The Princess Casino aboard Royal Princess will feature the latest new slots and table games.  Passengers can indulge in their favorite games of chance, from blackjack to Texas Hold’em and roulette, or participate in the excitement of slot tournaments.

Water & Light Show –Something that I’m excited to see is on the top deck where pools with fountains shoot plumes of water to delight and amaze all members of the family. Royal Princess also boasts a second-level stage above the pool area where live bands will play during unforgettable evening parties.

Crooners – The resident entertainer in Crooners will keep the crowds singing along while passengers try to choose their favorite from the bar’s famous selection of more than 50 martini varieties.Crooner's

Bellini’s – The new Bellini’s bar offers a prime location for watching the action in the Piazza below. This hotspot serves up a variety of Bellini-inspired drinks, including the new signature “Royal Bellini.”

Movies Under the Stars – Naturally Princess’ signature poolside theater will have a variety of movies and concert playing on the big screen. Featuring the largest Movies Under the Stars screen yet, Royal Princess offers passengers a great view while they relax on a comfortable lounger snuggled under a cozy fleece blanket and snack on complimentary fresh-popped popcorn or delicious cookies and milk.

Movies under the Stars

For me, I’m excited about the water show on the pool deck. My other item I’m really looking forward to is the Movies Under the Stars.  I like the open air. Love to be outside so that’s why those intrigue me. I probably could be found in the casino playing a little poker though.

So what are your favorites? What are you most looking forward too? Leave a comment and tell us what it is.

Titanic II Hotel or Cruise Ship?

Danielle, Aka @CruiseMiss, recently wrote in her blog; Titanic II A Legacy Or A Curse; her feelings about the plans to build the Titanic II. This plan is being pursued by Australian business man, Clive Palmer, and has the whole cruise world debating on if it’s a good or bad idea. Here is an excerpt from Danielle’s post, to read her whole post click here.

“Is there a demand for this type of vessel? I don’t really think there is however if she did come along I know many people would be truly fascinated by her and it would certainly be something very different indeed for our modern times.

Could she sustain herself? Maybe, there are one or two cruise lines with just one vessel and they manage to survive however, they are modern vessels with all the modern luxuries we crave whilst at sea.

I think the subject of Titanic II will forever have a divide and my own feelings lean me towards the “not such a great idea” area.”

Her post got me thinking more about if this is a good idea or not. For the most part’ I agree with Danielle that there won’t be a demand for this ship. This is especially true after the first couple of years, after the Titanic enthusiast and history buffs take their cruise. So does this mean I think it’s a bad idea to build this ship? Whoa…wait a moment before go that far!!

While I think that this won’t work as a cruise ship, I think that it could possibly be a good idea to make it into a floating hotel. A few points on why I believe this:

  1. The cost to spend a couple nights on the Titanic II would be far less than taking the Trans-Atlantic cruise. This would encourage the interested people to do this if they couldn’t afford the weeklong cruise
  2. This would cost less to operate, as the fuel would not be need to propel her through the water. The electrical and water systems could be hooked up to city utilities.
  3. The main dinning room could be made into a fine dinning restaurant that could be open to the public instead of just the people aboard the cruise.
  4. They could also build in a Titanic museum into the ship that would be open to the public therefore, increasing the possible revenue.

Am I saying this is a great idea, not even close? What I am saying is that, in my opinion, it works far better as a hotel than it does as a cruise ship.titanicII

So what are your thoughts, I want to hear them. Am I way off line on this thinking? Do you have any ideas or should the whole Titanic II idea be scraped altogether. Please leave your comments telling me what you think.

The Celebrity Reflection arrived in Miami, her homeport for the winter months, yesterday.  She will begin sailing her 7-day Caribbean sailing on Saturday December 8, 2012 after a couple shorter sailings.
